We reveal! It was they who saved Wrocław yesterday!

They organised themselves spontaneously. They did not know each other beforehand. They saved Wrocławskie Stabłowice from flooding. They fought alone almost to the end, without support from the authorities. It wasn't until their appeals started spreading on the Internet that the authorities stepped in.

There were thousands of heroes. It was they who erected the wall that saved Wrocław. A wall made of 500 tonnes of sand delivered without publicity by one “man from the shadows”… but more on that in a moment! Leaders emerged spontaneously – Kazik, who read Twitter, Ms Ania Chruściel from the Hermes shop on Stabłowicka Street, Mr Grzegorz Murdzek from Jodłowicka Street, where hundreds of tonnes of sand landed. Mr Bartek Ryś and Mr Jurek Michalak, who coordinated the defence of the embankments near Karczemna and Stabłowicka. Their story is fit for a film!
“A good dozen thousand people were involved in the action. Everything was organised from the bottom up, through neighbourhood groups on FB,” one of the organisers of the action tells us.
“Sandbags were brought in by their own vans, quads and wheelbarrows. They also brought shovels themselves.” – he adds.
“People were doing blique drops for sand so that there was something to build with. Then I came across a post on Twitter by Mr Radek Tadajewski, who offered to help with supplies, so I contacted him. At 9am on Wednesday morning, the first tipper truck (30 tonnes) arrived, followed by more. At this point the wall was growing, and we had run out of sand by the Stabłowicki park. A quick contact to Mr Radek and we redirected the deliveries to this very spot. In total, 500 tonnes of sand were delivered to three locations in Stabłowice in one day at his expense,” writes ourStabłowice caller.
“The city threw all its forces into protecting Marszowice, Stabłowice was left completely without help. Not even a substantive one;without any person to coordinate activities or advise on how to load and stack the bags. The result was tragic, the wall looked bad and was leaking, and it took time to fix it. It was only two days after pressure from residents that the city deployed a modest army unit to help in Stabłowice.” – he adds.
“Literally everyone joined in to help, shops gave volunteers water, restaurants brought meals, volunteers and volunteers made sandwiches. If someone wrote on the group that help was needed because water was coming up to the elderly people’s homes, there were immediately dozens of people there to help. To sum up: Stabłowice was 90% neighbourly solidarity and a dash of help from the services, proportions slightly different than in other places (and I have been to Marszowice and Łany near Wrocław),” concludes our informant.
The figure of the anonymous donor of more than 500 tonnes of free sand delivered “from nowhere” in a dozen hours looks interesting in this story. Sand used to build the wall that saved an entire neighbourhood. We follow this trail…
It soon turns out that the same man had, a few days earlier, set up a coffee and cake outlet for the firefighters and uniformed services saving Wrocław. It also turns out to be the Brazilian Consul in Wrocław…. So we call the consulate for a comment and after a while we hear:
No comment. Let’s leave the promoting of the floods to the politicians, and let’s applaud the real heroes of yesterday: all those people who, on their own, without any support, saved their homes only thanks to their hard, wonderful work! And when the weekend comes, why not head south, book an overnight stay in one of the really affected towns, help family, friends or complete strangers clear up the floods! Maybe this is the moment for a long-postponed trip to the Karkonosze Mountains or to the Kłodzko Valley or Głuchołazy? Now our presence there is much needed…” – Radek Tadajewski told us.
A beautiful story. May we encounter more like it! May the people of Brzeg Dolny also succeed in defending their city! Let’s keep our fingers crossed and… let’s act!
