Izabela Janachowska has not long been regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Polish wedding industry. She has worked with many celebrities to her credit, including organising the wedding of Roksana Węgiel and Kevin Mglej, as well as hosting wedding-themed TV shows and her own dress salon. Not surprisingly, her styling choices are often widely commented on.

During the long May weekend, Janachowska appeared at one of the weddings, where she acted both as a guest and organiser of the ceremony. Her black dress caused quite a stir. Usually this colour is associated with mourning, so the choice seemed surprising to many. Izabela quickly decided to answer questions and dispel doubts.

“We should listen to our own taste and intuition”.

In her post published after the wedding, Janachowska stressed that the black colour, despite its established associations, can also work well for joyful celebrations – as long as it is styled well.

Any colour is suitable! You just have to get the accessories right to make the whole look phenomenal. Actually, it all depends on the context, your own preferences and, of course, a little on the style of the wedding. (…) If in doubt, you can always get advice from your friends. But above all, we should listen to our own taste and intuition,” she wrote.

When might black not be the right choice?

Despite her open-minded approach to fashion choices, Janachowska also pointed out situations when black is worth avoiding.

There are situations when black dresses for a wedding don’t fit and it’s worth considering choosing a different colour. If you know that the bride and groom and their families are committed to tradition, it’s better to opt for lighter colours. Black can be perceived as too serious or even sad for such a joyous occasion. Check the invitation for dress code guidelines. Sometimes the bride and groom may ask for the colour fuchsia to be the dominant colour at the wedding, for example. For a boho or rustic style wedding, it is better to choose more natural and bright colours. A black dress may not suit a looser, more casual atmosphere, she added.
