For more than 20 years he served as a missionary in Peru, where he gained citizenship and served as bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo. In 2023, he was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis and became prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

The adoption of the name Leo XIV refers to Leo XIII, the Pope known for his encyclical ‘Rerum Novarum’, which laid the foundations of Catholic social teaching. The new pope has expressed a desire to continue this tradition, focusing on social justice and concern for the poor.
