Who was Chris Rea – life and career

Chris Rea was born in 1951 in Middlesbrough in the North East of England. His musical journey began in the 1970s, with his first international success being the song “Fool” (If You Think It’s Over), which earned him a Grammy nomination.

Rea was the author of many well-known songs, but it was `Driving Home for Christmas’ that brought him his greatest recognition. Written and recorded in the 1980s, the song has become an integral part of the festive radio season and Christmas playlists.

`Driving Home for Christmas’ first appeared as a B-side track in 1986, and was later re-recorded and released on the album New Light Through Old Windows in 1988.
