Eryk Moczko found himself at the centre of a heated debate following his performance at the ‘Back to School’ event in Warsaw’s Bemowo district. Some parents and local residents were outraged by the rapper’s vulgar language and the nature of the set he performed. The matter caused such a stir that the Bemowo District Council apologised to residents and announced that action would be taken. What exactly happened during Eryk Moczko’s concert?

Eryk Moczko in Bemowo. What happened during the concert?

Eryk Moczko was one of the stars of the ‘Back to School’ event, which took place on 4 September in front of the Bemowo District Office. Joining him on stage were, amongst others, Blanka, Tymek and Ania Dąbrowska. The event was free of charge and aimed primarily at the district’s young residents.

However, it was Eryk Moczko’s concert in Bemowo that caused the greatest stir. Parents present at the event drew particular attention to the frequent swearing from the stage and the song lyrics, which, in their view, were unsuitable for an event promoted as being for young people.

Why did the organisers invite Eryk Moczko?

The rapper performed at around 6 pm. The council had previously described him as a young artist gaining increasing popularity thanks to his energy and distinctive sound. The problem arose during the concert itself.

Part of the controversy centred not only on the rapper’s songs, but also on the obscene remarks he directed at the audience between songs. Footage from the event quickly began circulating on social media, and the discussion moved online.

Two distinct viewpoints emerged in the comments. Some residents criticised the artist’s behaviour, whilst others questioned why the organisers had chosen to invite Eryk Moczko in the first place, given that his work and stage persona were publicly available even before the event.

The Bemowo District Council apologises for the rapper’s performance

Following mounting criticism, the Bemowo District Council issued a statement. In its official statement, it acknowledged that the rapper’s performance at an event aimed at young people should not have taken place.

The Office also announced that the performer would face consequences in accordance with the terms of the contract. It was further announced that procedures for organising concerts would be reviewed and that the rules for vetting artists invited to events for children and young people would be tightened.

Consequences not only for Eryk Moczko

However, the matter did not end with the statement concerning the rapper. Maciej Kmita, the district’s spokesperson, confirmed that disciplinary action had also been taken against those responsible for selecting the artists and approving the event’s programme.

The council further clarified that the contractual penalties announced against Eryk Moczko relate to the obscene remarks he directed at the audience between songs. This is an important distinction, as part of the online discussion centred on the question of whether an artist can be penalised for performing a repertoire for which he was already known.

Who is responsible for Eryk Moczko’s concert? A heated debate has erupted online

It was precisely the issue of responsibility that became one of the main topics following Eryk Moczko’s concert in Bemowo.

One commentator pointed out that the rapper’s repertoire and image were no secret. In his view, the organisers should have checked in advance what the artist’s work was like and whether it was suitable for a ‘Back to School’ event. At the same time, he pointed out that Moczko himself could also have adapted his behaviour to suit the audience, which included children.

Similar questions arose in the comments section under Bemowo’s statement. Internet users wondered why the consequences should fall solely on the performer, given that the organiser was responsible for selecting the artists.

Who is Eryk Moczko?

Eryk Moczko is associated with the rap and online scenes. He also gained recognition as a member of the DRE$$CODE/Dresscode project, and built his popularity largely amongst young audiences and social media users. Onet highlights his links to Dresscode, whilst WP emphasises that, prior to the event, his repertoire and stage persona were easily verifiable online.

Eryk Moczko’s behavior at the concert was totally inappropriate for an event aimed at young people. The backlash was well-deserved.

The Bemowo District Council’s apology is a step in the right direction, but they need to do better in vetting artists for future events.
