The legend of the Golden Train is back in the headlines again. Has the famous treasure-filled depot really been found in 2025? A group of searchers claim to know the exact location of the tunnel and carriages. We check what is already known and whether the sensational information is likely to change history.

The Golden Train – a legend that has fired the imagination for years

The Golden Train is one of the most fascinating and mysterious legends associated with the Second World War. According to accounts, the armoured depot was supposed to be transporting huge amounts of gold, valuables and works of art. The train allegedly disappeared in the last months of the war, fleeing from Wrocław towards Świebodzice.

Since the 1940s, the subject of the Golden Train has returned regularly. Many researchers, history enthusiasts and treasure hunters have tried to find the depot, which according to legend was hidden in tunnels in the region of the Owl Mountains in Lower Silesia. Despite numerous expeditions, including those involving the military and specialised equipment, the train was never found. Until now?

The Golden Train 2025 – what we know about the latest reports

In December 2025, the topic returns with redoubled force thanks to the ‘Golden Train 2025’ search group. Its leader is Michał Motak, who claims to know the exact location of the tunnel and three freight cars that could belong to the legendary train.

The group operates in the Lower Silesia region, near Wałbrzych and the Książ castle. It is there, in the mountains, that the camouflaged entrances to the underground structures are supposed to be located. According to Motak, he had already officially reported the discovery of a suspicious structure resembling a railway tunnel to the relevant services on 25 April 2025.

“The tunnel is delineated to the nearest centimetre” – bold words from the head of the searchers

Michal Motak does not beat around the bush – in his opinion, the group has accurately identified the location of the Golden Train. In his statements, he assures that all field data, measurements and indications “pin down” into an unambiguous location. Motak has also made a public appearance and confirmed that he has applied to start GPR surveys.

Tunnels, carriages and mysterious signals – what could the earth be hiding?

The ‘Golden Train 2025’ group has measurements which, according to them, confirm the existence of underground structures. Geolocation technicians have pinpointed a specific location where three carriages are supposed to be. The Forestry Commission has given permission to access the site, and now the team is just waiting for the conservation officer’s decision.

Sceptics versus enthusiasts – does the Golden Train really exist?

Many historians and experts remain cautious. They recall that similar claims were already made in 2015, when two men announced that a train had been found. At that time, however, it ended with GPR surveys, which showed that there was only a natural geological formation underground.

Why had previous attempts failed?

In 2015, Poland was alive with Golden Train fever. The work was carried out with great vigour, but concrete evidence was lacking. The depot was not found and the media and public quickly lost interest.

What next for the search for the Golden Train?

In December 2025, everything depends on the decision of the conservation officer. If permission is granted, the group will be able to carry out GPR surveys. The results are to be made available to the public, which could completely change the perception of the legend so far.

If it turns out that there is indeed a tunnel with wagons underground, it will be the biggest archaeological find in Poland in years. If, however, the research fails again – the legend of the Golden Train will again go down in history as an unfulfilled dream.

Summary: Has the Golden Train really been found?

At the moment, there is no conclusive evidence to confirm that the Golden Train has been found. The search group claims to know the location of the tunnel and carriages, but independent confirmation is lacking.

We are still waiting for:

  • the results of the GPR survey,
  • approval of the conservation officer,
  • the publication of photographs and data from the findspot.

Until then, the legend of the Golden Train remains…. only a legend. But will it soon become a reality?
