After spending almost four months in custody in Wrocław, Janusz Palikot has regained his freedom. The well-known politician left the walls of the detention centre thanks to a bail payment of PLN 2 million.

What was Janusz Palikot detained for?

Janusz Palikot was detained by the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau on 3 October 2024 in Lublin. The reason was serious allegations concerning the activities of his business. The former MP heard eight charges, seven of which related to fraud and one to misappropriation of property. The public prosecutor’s office accuses Palikot of leading several thousand people to a disadvantageous dispossession of property to the amount of almost 70 million zlotys.

Palikot in custody

After his arrest, Palikot spent almost four months in custody, awaiting the possibility of bail. It was only in January that he managed to collect the required amount of bail. While in custody, the former MP repeatedly insisted that he was innocent and that the charges against him were unfounded.

Palikot and Wojewódzki – a collaboration that has caused controversy

In 2020, Janusz Palikot, together with Kuba Wojewódzki, founded the company Przyjazne Państwo, which produced CBD-infused alcohol and soft drinks. The project, initially promoted as innovative and groundbreaking, became quite popular, but after Palikot was detained, the journalist publicly apologised for collaborating with him. Wojewódzki did not address the accusations against his former partner in detail, only pointing out that his decision to collaborate was a mistake.

Palikot left custody and announces fight for justice

After leaving custody, Janusz Palikot announced that he will demand compensation for his time in solitary confinement, claiming that the whole case is unfounded. Further court proceedings will decide his fate. The former MP intends to fight to clear his name and repair the damage done to him.
