On 27 January 2025, King Charles III visited Poland for the first time since assuming the throne in 2022. The reason for the visit was to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The British monarch spent this special day in two places: Krakow and Auschwitz, where he took part in ceremonies commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. The event brought together survivors, politicians and representatives of many countries.

King Charles III in Auschwitz

The visit to Auschwitz was one of the highlights of King Charles III’s visit to Poland. The ceremony, which was broadcast live, provided many emotions, especially during the speeches of the surviving prisoners. Cameras captured the moment when the monarch, clearly moved by the words of witnesses to the tragedy, wiped away tears. King Charles III, along with other leaders including President Volodymyr Zelenski, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President Emmanuel Macron and the King and Queen of Spain, laid candles in tribute to the victims.

King Charles III flew to Poland to mark an important anniversary

Prior to his visit to Auschwitz, Charles visited Krakow. A special highlight was the Jewish Community Centre, the opening of which he supported with his presence in 2008, while still a prince. During the meeting, the monarch had the opportunity to speak with survivors and to receive a gift from Polish children – a drawing that brought a smile to his face. In his speech, King Charles III stressed the importance of such initiatives, saying:

In a world that experienced the Holocaust, projects such as this centre restore faith in humanity.

He also added that there is still a need to work towards a better future.
