A former Customs and Excise officer, she now serves as First Lady and talks openly about how her life has changed. In her first, extremely candid interview, Marta Nawrocka reveals her plans, her values and what still gives her a sense of home and service

Marta Nawrocka: New role, new challenges

In the few months since becoming First Lady, Marta Nawrocka has undergone a huge transformation. As she herself admits:

This is an opportunity, but also a responsibility. It is a commitment to the people, to history, to herself.

Together with her husband, she has entered a public space that requires her to be both present and to act – with her head, her heart and a real readiness.

Close to the people, not just a symbol

The First Lady does not want to be a passive ornament of representation – her mission has a practical dimension. In her words:

I, as the spouse of the president, would like to use this time to be close to the people, really close. I want to hear them talk about their fears, their joys, the ordinary things that build our community from the inside out.

Its purpose is to be a bridge between the official world and the everyday world – because it is the ‘ordinary things’ that form the foundation of the community.

Marta Nawrocka and the change of service

Prior to taking on her new role, Marta was part of the customs and revenue team for 18 years. She says of the decision she made:

‘It wasn’t an easy decision because I was part of the customs and revenue service for 18 years. … I think there is a moment in everyone’s life when they have to take a step in a different direction, not because something is ending, but because something new is starting. That’s how I treat this time: as another dimension of service.

For her, leaving her previous profession was not a loss, but an entry into a new form of service – no longer just to the institution, but to society as a whole.

Family as anchor and foundation

Although she has a public role, Marta is careful not to lose her most important function – being a wife and mother. As she emphasises:

‘You can be the First Lady of Poland, but you also have to remain the First Lady of your own home.

For her, home – with its rituals, laughter and ordinariness – is a place where protocol does not apply and only love and real relationships remain.
