Influencer Olga Legosz has once again caused a storm on social media by addressing a topic that many avoid - alcohol advertising. Specifically beer, which in our culture has almost become a 'harmless drink' rather than a harmful stimulant. In an emotional post on Instagram, she criticised the government's baffling policy whereby profits from beer advertising are used to fund sports activities for children.

Influencer outraged by beer ads

Is beer really less dangerous than vodka? In the eyes of the public, it often is, but does that mean it doesn’t carry the risk of addiction, domestic violence or tragedies caused by drink-driving? According to Olga, alcohol is alcohol – regardless of the percentage. Advertising it on TV only reinforces the idea that drinking alcohol is perfectly normal. Legosz bluntly points out that such advertising, even if aimed at adults, can also influence young people, shaping their perception of drinking alcohol as an integral part of adulthood and entertainment.

Beer advertising revenue funds children’s sports activities

As we learn from the post, alcohol advertising is funding youth sports! An influencer under the pseudonym nomadmum81 points out the questionable morality of the current situation. As she points out, children’s physical health depends on the income from advertising campaigns for a stimulant that can ruin lives.

“Maybe we should start charging excise duty on beer normally, like on any alcohol by content, and then the money raised will enable the Polish state to finance what it wants?”<blockquoteclass=”instagram-media” data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=”https://www.instagram.com/p/C_52vDdoMQ-/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading” data-instgrm-version=”14″ style=”background:#FFF; Internet users unanimously support Olga Legosz’s demands

A lot of comments supporting Olga appeared under the post. Users almost unanimously agree with her, pointing out that such links between alcohol and children’s health are unacceptable. Other influencers also spoke out. Marysia Krasowska posted a comment that read “I really appreciate you fighting this!!! 💪🔥”. There was also no shortage of opinions from the medical world. Dr Agnieszka Nalewczynska wrote “Beer is an alcohol. Just like any other alcohol it is great for solving brain cells, bank accounts and family relationships. Unfortunately, it does not solve any problems. To PARPA.”

Petition to ban beer advertising

Olga Legosz, involved in the fight for changes to the law on alcohol advertising, did not just stop at media criticism. In April this year, she created a petition addressed to the Ministry of Health, in which she clearly formulates her position and calls for a ban on beer advertising. Here is the full text of the petition:Dear Minister of Health, While observing the public discussion on the subject of alcohol, I am extremely concerned about the positioning of an alcoholic product such as beer in it.The rationale behind the legal state which allows the beer industry to advertise its products almost unlimitedly, including in connection with sports, social bonding or relaxation, remains a mystery. In the opinion of many consumers but also of retailers, beer has ceased to be alcohol. We have reached an absurdity in which food discounters, publishing their sales magazines separately dedicated to alcohol and food products, place beer in the food section!!!Although the figures show that Poles spend the most money precisely on beer, it can still be widely advertised. As we all know, we have a national problem with the level of alcohol consumed, but by taking action piecemeal, only against a part of products containing alcohol, what we get is apparent effectiveness. Particularly as, due to beer’s exemption from sugar tax, it is often cheaper than a soft drink. It is also astonishing that a percentage of the money spent on beer advertising, makes up the Sports Activities Fund, as the beer industry boasts. And the fact is downright outrageous that the amount of activities for children, the Ministry of Sport should depend on the amount of money spent on beer advertising !!! I would very much appreciate a full analysis of the topic. The science is unanimous – any type of alcohol is addictive and creating a narrative that beer is not – is particularly dangerous. Yours sincerely,Olga Legosz Olga Legosz’s petition has received overwhelming support from the public – it has already been signed by over 20,000 people, which shows that this topic is close to many people and that a change in the law is becoming more and more desirable.

The link between beer advertising and children’s sports funding is alarming. Olga Legosz’s petition is a step in the right direction towards protecting our youth.
