Malgorzata Kozuchowska recalls meeting Pope Francis

Małgorzata Kożuchowska shared on social media a personal memory of her meeting with Pope Francis. In her post, she published previously unpublished photos from an audience in St Peter’s Square ten years ago, where she was accompanied by her son. The actress described the Pope as “an extremely direct, warm and spontaneous man”. According to her, the Pope “took the world’s attention to those who, for various reasons, found themselves on the margins of society”.

Pope Francis has died at the age of 88

Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025 at 7:35am in his flat at Casa Santa Marta. The cause of death was a stroke, which led to a coma and heart failure. In recent months, the Pope had struggled with serious health problems, including pneumonia and bronchitis, type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, was the first Jesuit on the See of Peter. His pontificate was characterised by modesty, openness to dialogue and concern for those most in need. He was known for his renunciation of many papal privileges, his life of simplicity and his commitment to social and ecological causes. His death has caused mourning around the world, with the faithful gathering at the Vatican to pay tribute to him.

Małgorzata Kożuchowska’s farewell

In her post, Małgorzata Kożuchowska stressed that Pope Francis was close to the people, visiting prisoners and sitting down with the homeless for meals held at the Vatican. The actress also pointed out that despite his advanced age, the Pope had the energy of a young man and tackled difficult, often controversial topics.

He was close to the people. His pontificate came at a difficult time, and although he was one of the oldest popes he had an open mind and energy to match a young man,” says Kozuchowska.

Final farewell and preparations for the conclave

Pope Francis’ body will be displayed in St Peter’s Basilica, where the faithful will be able to pay their respects. In accordance with his will, he will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, in a simple tomb without decoration. A conclave will begin in the coming days, during which the cardinals will elect a new pope.
