A drama based on true events, a moving story of lead-poisoned children and a woman who dared to stand up against the system. "Lead Children" is the Netflix series that not only Poland is talking about today. When a recommendation is made by the New York Times, you know one thing - we are dealing with a production not to be missed.

Lead children – what is the series about?

The series Lead Children takes viewers back to the realities of communist Poland, to industrial Silesia, where children suffer from mysterious illnesses on a massive scale. In the background – steelworks, industrial plants and omnipresent lead, which poisons the organisms of the youngest.

The main character is a paediatrician, who is one of the first to start piecing together the facts and raise the alarm about the dramatic effects of environmental pollution. Her fight for children’s health quickly becomes a fight against a system that does not want to let the truth out to the public.

Who was Dr Wadowska-Król? The true story of ‘Lead Children’

The plot of the series is inspired by the activities of a Silesian doctor – Dr Wadowska-Król – who, during the communist era, publicised the problem of lead poisoning among children living near steelworks.

It was her determination and courage that became the foundation of the script. The doctor conducted research, diagnosed the youngest patients and fought for their treatment, despite pressure from the authorities. This story remained little known for years, but today, thanks to the series Lead Children, it is reaching a wide audience.

Joanna Kulig in “Lead Children”. – the role of a lifetime?

Joanna Kulig plays the character inspired by Dr Wadowska-Król and, as critics emphasise, creates one of the most poignant performances of her career. In interviews, the actress admitted that the role was a huge emotional challenge for her. Her character is a woman full of doubts, fatigue and fear, who nevertheless does not give up the fight for her children. It is this authenticity that makes the audience experience each episode so strongly.

Lead children – The New York Times recommends Netflix’s Polish series

The recommendation from The New York Times is a huge accolade for the creators of ‘Lead Children’. The daily noted, among other things, the universal dimension of the story, the realistic depiction of the climate of the People’s Republic of Poland, the strong social and ecological context, as well as Joanna Kulig’s outstanding performance. If interest remains at the current level, ‘Lead Children’ could become the next Polish title to conquer the world.
