It is hard to imagine any major music event without Maryla Rodowicz, and yet this year you will have to. For the 61st National Festival of Polish Song in Opole, the veteran of the Polish entertainment scene did not receive an invitation. This is not the first Opole scandal involving her. Rodowicz still holds a grudge against Krystyna Prońko.

Maryla Rodowicz will not appear in Opole

Maryla Rodowicz appeared on the Opole stage even when most performers refused to take part in the festival organised by TVP. This year, however, for the first time since 2012, she will be missing from the National Festival of Polish Song. It is unofficially said that she did not receive an invitation precisely because she has been so eager to come to Opole over the past years.

Maryla Rodowicz’s explanation

The singer herself explains that she has too much on her mind. As she let it be known in an interview with Plejada, it’s even a good thing:

I’m currently in the process of recording a new album. There will be duets with young artists. I wasn’t invited, but I’ve already been to Opole so many times that I won’t cry. I can’t keep repeating the same repertoire over and over again, and there would have to be a good reason why I would want to perform in Opole.

Conflict with Krystyna Prońko

This is not the first affront from the KFPP organisers that Maryla has experienced in her career. As it turns out, Krystyna Prońko was involved in the scandal from years ago, which Rodowicz still holds a grudge against her for. Although 43 years have passed since then, Maryla still remembers in detail the insult she had to swallow then. It was about a song, submitted by her for the 1981 Premiership concert. Rodowicz wanted to fight for victory with the song ‘Hej, żeglujże, żeglarzu’, previously broadcast on Radio Three.

Controversy from the past

The song seemed to be a sure-fire hit, but just before her performance, Rodowicz found out that she could indeed present it on the Opole stage, but outside the competition. As it turned out, the festival’s artistic commission received a protest, questioning the freshness of the song. The author of the protest, referred to by Rodowicz in the book as “Ms P.”, claimed that it was difficult to call “Hej, żeglujże, żeglarzu” a premiere song, since it had already been presented on the radio.

Strained relationship with Krystyna Prońko

It was no secret from the start that it was all about Krystyna Prońko, as Rodowicz happened to mention her by name. Maryla lamented that “Prońko smeared” an appropriate protest, which was reportedly additionally not the first on her part either. However, in her biography, she tried to maintain a semblance of discretion. As she confessed in ‘Long Live the Ball’: My

legs gave way under me. It was as if someone had smacked me upside the head. Tears in my eyes. To this day, even though I have not done anything wrong to her, Mrs P. treats me like air and does not even respond to my ‘good morning’. She is always pouting in my presence.

Rodowicz eventually sang “Hey, żeglujże, żeglarzu” on shaky legs and the song, as expected, became a big hit

.

However, as a result of a protest lodged by “Mrs P.”, she was not allowed to take part in the Premiership competition.

Maryla’s perseverance paid off with ‘Hey, żeglujże, żeglarzu’ becoming a hit despite the obstacles. What a story!
