Antoni Pawlicki, a well-known Polish actor, is not one of those people who often talk about his private life. Although the public mainly associates him with his film and theatre roles, as well as his famous father and uncle, few people realise that there was another special figure in his family - his grandmother, Barbara Rachwalska.

Family roots in the art world

It is no secret that Antoni Pawlicki comes from a family with strong artistic traditions. His father, Tadeusz Pawlicki, was a cinematographer, and his uncle Maciej Pawlicki was a journalist and film producer. However, few people know that the actor’s grandmother, Barbara Rachwalska, was one of the most important figures in post-war Polish cinema. Although she never used the surname Pawlicka, her acting achievements went down in the history of Polish cinema.

Barbara Rachwalska – star of screen and theatre

Barbara Rachwalska has appeared in over a hundred film and television productions. One of the first films she starred in was ‘Przygoda na Mariensztacie’. Her talent and diligence allowed her to take part in many cult series and films of the communist era, such as “Stake More Than Life”, “Chłopi”, “Janosik”, “Noce i dnie” or “Alternatywy 4”, where viewers remembered her as Tekla Wagnerówna. Her last role was in the film “Controlled Talks”, where she played the role of Jarząbek’s aunt.

Antoni Pawlicki’s pride and admiration

Antoni Pawlicki makes no secret of the fact that his grandmother was an inspiration to him. In an interview, he talked about her extraordinary work ethic and determination, which impressed him from an early age:

Following my grandmother’s story, I realised that she was a titan of work. Every day she would rehearse at the theatre, and afterwards she would go to recordings at the Polish Radio Theatre or to a film set. And in the evening she would still act in a play. She would leave before 10 a.m. and return after 10 p.m. And she took care of her three children. Between recordings, rehearsals and performances, she would go shopping with shopping bags. In the mornings, she got the children ready for school, cleaned and cooked dinner. She loved her family, but work was her passion. And she was able to reconcile the two without giving up anything.
