Instead of a classic list of favourite songs, Julia Żugaj and Norbert Bieńkowski opted for fun and an element of surprise. The couple created a Christmas song ranking by drawing lots of songs and assigning them - according to their own feelings - the appropriate places in the list. The result? A subjective, but very atmospheric list of December hits.

A draw instead of a pre-made list

When ranking, Julia and Norbert did not put together a playlist in advance. Each song was drawn at random and then rated on the fly. After listening to it, they decided where it should be ranked based on mood, memories and how much they associated the song with Christmas.

Timeless classics high in the ranking

Christmas classics such as ‘Let It Snow’ and Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song’ quickly emerged among the songs drawn. These songs perfectly capture the calm and warm atmosphere of Christmas. Like the song ‘It’s Beginning to Look Like Christmas’, which has been building up the festive mood from the very first notes.

Energy, pop and Christmas cheer

Not all the draws led to nostalgic sounds, however. The chart also included more energetic offerings such as Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Wrapped in Red’, ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ and ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’. These songs, although different in style, are, according to Julia and Norbert, great for the pre-Christmas preparations and bring a good dose of positive energy to the ranking.

Hits known all over the world

The draw also brought international hits without which it is hard to imagine December playlists. “Feliz Navidad” and Mariah Carey’s iconic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” are songs that – regardless of their place in the ranking – are automatically associated with Christmas and return to the top of popularity every year.

A subjective ranking with Christmas spirit

‘Jingle Bells’, one of the most recognisable Christmas songs in the world, closed the list. Although the order was the result of a random draw and personal assessments, Julia Żugaj and Norbert Bieńkowski’s ranking shows that the magic of Christmas lies both in the classics and in having fun discovering them together.
