Dramatic confession of sight loss by Polish Olympian

Agata Wróbel, the legend of Polish weightlifting, shocked fans with a frank confession. On her Facebook profile, she reported that she had lost her sight and her life was marked by difficulties that left her feeling socially excluded. Despite the achievements and successes that have brought her international fame, she now faces serious health and financial challenges.

Exceptional career ended by illness

Agata Wróbel was one of the most successful female athletes in the history of Polish sport. She won medals at the Olympic Games, world and European championships, breaking records and becoming remembered by fans as an undisputed champion. Unfortunately, her sporting path was interrupted by a diagnosis of hepatitis C. Despite returning to several competitions, Wróbel finally ended her career in 2010 to concentrate on her treatment and everyday life.

An everyday life marked by difficulties

After her career ended, the sportswoman took a job at a waste sorting plant in the UK. She returned to Poland, but her life was complicated by serious health problems, including diabetes and depression, which worsened after the death of her mother. In recent years, Agata Wróbel has asked for financial support for her treatment and to pay off her debts. Recently, in a dramatic post, she described her situation after losing her sight.

I don’t want anything for myself anymore, really nothing. Since I lost my sight, I basically feel excluded from society – she wrote.

Help for animals a priority

In her publications, Wróbel emphasises that even in the face of hardship she wants to help others, especially the animals she cares for. The proceeds from the sale of commemorative mugs with her autograph were to be used to improve the living conditions of her dogs. Unfortunately, the initiative didn’t work out as expected.

I had hoped that somehow it would go, such an autographed souvenir mug, but I guess it should have happened 25 years ago. Now it’s all gone – she added with resignation.

Olympic pension the only support

Currently, Agata Wróbel’s main source of income is her Olympic pension, which amounts to almost 5,000 PLN net in 2025. Despite this, the daily life of the Olympic champion is still full of challenges. Her story is a reminder of the need for support for athletes who often face serious health and financial problems after their careers end.
