Edyta Górniak recalls her Eurovision performance: “I locked myself in the bathroom and said I wasn’t going to come out.”

On the Dzień dobry TVN programme, Edyta Górniak talked about the hardships she faced just before her Eurovision performance. The artist was not only battling enormous stress, but also a serious illness that threatened her ability to sing.

I was taking injections, an antibiotic in general. I had to take all sorts of strong pills to get my voice back at all. And, in fact, the late Wiktor Kubiak, who was with me at the time, my first, actually the only manager, so from the heart, supported me a lot,” recalls Górniak

Edyta Górniak recalls how, before the performance itself, due to enormous stress, she hid in the bathroom, declaring that she would not come out on stage – I don’t know if I’ve said it before, but before the very exit I locked myself in the bathroom, I said that I would not come out. And Wiktor knocked on my door and said: “Mrs Edytka, you have to go now, really, you have to go”. And he used different words and tones, sometimes he shouted, at the last moment I thought I just wouldn’t sing. I said, ‘Victor, I don’t have a voice at all, I can’t do it, it’s too difficult a piece, what have I done’.”

Magic on Stage

Despite the odds, Edyta Górniak hit the stage and gave an unforgettable performance. As soon as she stepped off the stage, she lost her voice, which the artist herself considers a miracle – I remember the moment when I was escorted from backstage by this kind of stage manager, he gave me the microphone and left. And I was left alone, on this huge, gigantic stage, where there was an audience so widely spaced that I couldn’t even see the end. I thought this was the moment, that I was dying, that I wasn’t going to make it. And then I asked for trust, for the support of the angels, so that I wouldn’t lose my voice for the whole song. When I came down, I didn’t have a voice at all, so it was a miracle. It was one of the biggest miracles both for me and for Poland.
