Wachowicz and Makłowicz – the beginnings of their collaboration

Robert Makłowicz is one of the most respected figures in Polish show business today, known for his colourful statements and charismatic style. However, as Ewa Wachowicz revealed, had it not been for her intervention, he might never have made it on television. Wachowicz, a former Miss Polonia and television producer, worked with Makłowicz for almost a decade on his programme Robert Makłowicz’s Culinary Journeys. In an interview for the programme ‘Raptowne rozmowy’, she revealed that it was she who persuaded the then head of the station, Nina Terentiew, to trust the culinary critic.

I just helped him to make his name on television. We did a programme together called Robert Makłowicz’s Culinary Journeys and I convinced Nina Terentiew, who was not convinced by it. And this is certainly to my credit,” she admitted.

Backstage of Makłowicz’s success

Although Wachowicz played a key role in introducing Makłowicz to the small screen, she emphasises that his further success was solely down to his talent. His unique personality, expressive character and distinctive voice attracted the attention of viewers and made him quickly popular.

I only helped him a little. Robert is an incredible personality. It’s just that television likes people who are ‘what they are’. You have to have a personality, you have to break through that glass screen and through the media. (…) I helped him, just enough to make him appear on television,” explained Wachowicz.

A legend of culinary television

Thanks to Wachowicz’s support and his own skills, Makłowicz became an icon of television gastronomy. For years he hosted an original programme on Polish Television and later moved to the Internet, where he continues to win fans, especially among younger viewers. It’s a story that shows how key the right people you meet on your career path can be, but also how much depends on your own determination and talent. Wachowicz modestly credits herself as Makłowicz’s ‘mother of success’, emphasising that it was his personality that made him a star.
