Although Irena Santor always exuded cheerfulness, her life was not free from tragic events. For years she hid painful losses from the world – the death of her father, her friend Ludmila Jakubczak, and the secret connected with the loss of her only child. Despite the artist’s public image, many were unaware of the heavy experiences that marked her life.

Irena Santor’s daughter – a tragic family story

In 1958, Irena Santor, still using her maiden name Wiśniewska, married concertmaster Stanisław Santor. A year later, their daughter Sylwia was born. Unfortunately, fate meant that the tiny child only survived for two days. This event left a lasting mark on the artist’s life, which was surrounded by obscurity and gossip for many years.

The secret of happy love and a second marriage

After divorcing her first husband, Irena Santor fell in love for the second time. Her chosen one was director and presenter Zbigniew Korpolewski. In an interview with VIVA Magazine in 2014, she said:

I’m not a saint. I just adhere to the motto: Don’t do unto others what is unkind to you. I’ve done some stupid things in my life for which I apologise. And when I fell in love once, it was for life and death. It ended in marriage, but after 19 years I got divorced. It was a tough experience. And then I fell in love a second time and also to death and life.

Despite the formal informality of their relationship, the artist treated him like a husband. After his death in 2018, she put her career on hold, but two years later she firmly denied rumours of losing her voice, singing at the 90th anniversary of Jurata.

Irena Santor’s struggle with illness

In 1999, the artist faced breast cancer, overcoming it thanks to her determination and positive approach to life. During an interview for VIVA Santor confessed:

It was a tiny cancer, but very malignant. I didn’t lose my breast. I got through it without chemotherapy, I only took radiation. The worst thing is waiting for the results. It’s such a powerlessness that you’re alive, but you don’t know if you’ll still get up tomorrow. I know it’s necessary to die, but I would like to live as long as possible.

In the spring of 2018, she was hospitalised with a suspected stroke, but again she proved her strength and perseverance. The lady of Polish song believes in doctors, friendship and the support of loved ones. Her life is a story of struggle, but also of perseverance and love of life.In an interview with Dzień Dobry TVN. Santor said:

This is the foundation: friendship, the people who surround me. But also thanks to the doctors. I believe in doctors, I bow to them as much as I can and thank them as much as I can. I am disciplined. They care that I have the benefit of their knowledge.
