Never in Life: Back in a Modern Form

One of the most recognisable characters in Polish morality play literature has once again appeared in the public space, this time in a format tailored to modern audiences. Judyta – the heroine known from the novel Never in Life! – returns in the sequel, which has been made available as an audiobook.

The new story is promoted by a video in which the character is played by Danuta Stenka. Already the first excerpts of the teaser indicate that this will not just be a recreation of the old atmosphere, but a story set in a completely new reality.

Judith after years – what has changed?

In the short teaser, the character herself tells what has happened in her life over the past years.

It’s been a long time. But we haven’t seen each other! Come on, come on, come on. You’re probably surprised to meet me here. Judith from the editorial department who runs her own matrimonial office? Never in my life! Sit down, sit down. But we have catching up to do. Adam and I are still together. We live in the same house by the river. It’s just that now we have grandchildren visiting and I’m a grandmother. But… I love the nickels. And at Tosi’s… well… everything is fine, fine too… except I don’t know what’s going on with her husband. But, Judith, don’t be dramatic! As my ex-spouse used to say. What am I going to tell you. What emerges from this speech is a picture of a heroine who has achieved some stability, but her life is still not without its emotions and challenges.

A new role: grandmother and entrepreneur

In the book Just That! Judith is operating in a completely different stage of life than before. She still lives in the house by the river – a place that symbolised her independence – and remains in a relationship with Adam.

At the same time, new elements emerge: the protagonist has become a grandmother and is actively involved in family life. What’s more, she runs a matrimonial office together with her partner, which is one of the most surprising threads of the continuation.

Peace only on the surface

Although Judith’s life seems orderly at first glance, tensions and more difficult relationships are still present in the background. This is particularly evident in the context of her daughter, whose situation causes the protagonist concern.

The new story does not focus solely on the main character. The fates of the clients of the matrimonial office also play an important role, creating parallel stories about relationships, emotions and life choices.

The sequel to `Never in Life: A story after the ‘happy ending’

The sequel does not replicate the familiar pattern of the first part. Instead of a story about starting over, there is a reflection on what happens afterwards – when life has seemingly stabilised, but still manages to surprise.

Judith’s Return is an attempt to show a heroine who is more mature, with a different baggage of experiences and new problems that also resonate with a younger generation of audiences.

New audience, same heroine

Thanks to the audiobook format and its presence on Storytel, the story also reaches new audiences who may not have known the character before.

Although it is too early to judge the success of the sequel, initial reactions suggest that Judith is still generating interest. Her life after the end of the original story proves to be as intriguing as the path that led to it.
