Lara Gessler and Piotr Szeląg, a couple known for their long-term relationship, have long described their relationship as a `Roman marriage'. But what exactly does this unusual term mean?

‘Roman Marriage’ vs Civil Wedding

Piotr Szeląg, the celebrity’s partner, talked about their unique approach to their relationship in an interview with the WP Women’s portal. “Roman marriage” for him means the privacy of marital affairs and their validity decided by the couple themselves, rather than a formal legal act. According to him, for the Romans, marriage was a de facto relationship, it did not start with a wedding, but with an actual desire to stay together. Piotr Szeląg emphasised that for them a civil wedding was a formality before the birth of a child. Szeląg expressed his belief that decisions concerning marriage should belong solely to the spouses and not be imposed by external institutions.

I am in favour of people doing what they want and what they feel as much as possible at any time if they love,” he stressed

Second wedding in the mountains

Although the couple had a civil wedding, their ‘real’ wedding took place in December 2021 in the mountains. Lara Gessler described the ceremony as “real”. The second wedding was an opportunity to share the joy with loved ones. Gessler explained that the first wedding was more of a formality, organised before the birth of the baby, without the participation of their loved ones.

Family and child-rearing

Currently, Lara Gessler and Piotr Szeląg are the happy parents of two children, and their relationship has evolved with life events. In 2022, their son Bernard was born, which further strengthened the bond between them. The conclusion of this story is clear: the couple decided to follow their own values and choose paths in line with their beliefs, which has made their relationship unique and suited their individual needs.

I admire their approach to marriage, focusing on the bond between them rather than the legalities. It’s refreshing to see couples prioritize their own values and beliefs.

I can understand why they had a civil wedding before the birth of their child, but it’s great that they were able to have a ‘real’ wedding later on to celebrate with loved ones.
