Margaret, a well-known Polish singer, recently shared her thoughts on the difficulties faced by Polish artists trying to make a name for themselves on foreign music markets. In an interview with ZAiKS, she highlighted the problem of Polish performers not being taken seriously by international audiences and the media.

Margaret on the difficulties of Polish artists on the international music scene

Margaret, who has several English-language songs to her credit, such as “Cool Me Down”, noted that the European music market favours artists from English-speaking countries, while artists from Eastern Europe, including Poland, are often overlooked. She stressed that even on Polish radio stations, promoters are more likely to offer songs by artists from the UK than from neighbouring countries.

The singer pointed out that Europe is not yet used to listening to music originating from Poland, which makes it extremely difficult for Polish artists to break through on the international scene.

Margaret’s successes on foreign markets

Despite these challenges, Margaret has had some success outside Poland. Her single “Cool Me Down” gained popularity in Sweden, covering gold. However, by her own admission, single achievements do not translate into a sustained presence of Polish artists on international charts.

Challenges for Polish artists on the international scene

Margaret’s statements shed light on a broader problem that Polish artists face. Lack of recognition and difficulties in gaining recognition in Western markets are not only due to language barriers, but also prejudice and established patterns in the music industry.

This international career is a mega difficult case for us Poles. Nobody takes us seriously, for people from all over the world we are “Poland, who?”. And some promoter comes to your Polish radio station, says: “Listen, I have a mega chick from the UK, she’s doing super, and I have another super chick from Belarus”. Well, after all, this peasant won’t even check the other chick from Belarus, even though we are in Poland – claims Margaret.

Polish performers often have to overcome additional obstacles in order for their work to be noticed and appreciated abroad.

It’s sad to see that even in our own country, Polish artists are overshadowed by those from English-speaking countries.

I think the music industry needs to be more open to artists from different countries, not just the English-speaking ones.

It’s time for the music industry to break down barriers and give artists from all countries an equal chance to succeed.
