The 30-year-old Szpak, known for his extravagant style and original image, has faced difficulties in being accepted by those around him from an early age. His unusual appearance, wearing make-up, jewellery and distinctive clothes, sometimes led to harassment and humiliation. Even at school and in examinations, teachers found it difficult to accept his distinctiveness.

However, one of Michal’s most traumatic experiences was related to his attempt to take his First Holy Communion. At that time, when he had short hair and a characteristic curl which he treated as his trademark, the priest directly threatened him with not being allowed to receive the sacrament if he did not change his hairstyle.

At one of the meetings before communion, the priest said that if I didn’t cut this curl, which meant everything to me at that moment, I loved it, it was my image even then, he said that if I didn’t cut it, he wouldn’t let me in for communion,’ the artist recalled.

This surprising confession shows that even such a well-known figure as Michał Szpak experienced difficulties with accepting his appearance, especially in the context of church institutions. For many people, this story can be a stimulus to reflect on tolerance and respect for the individual identity of each person, regardless of their appearance or preferences.
