Natalia Lewandowska, the 27-year-old vice-miss of Warmia and Mazury, until recently led an active life as a mum and model. Today she is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit after a dramatic diagnosis.

Who is Natalia Lewandowska?

Natalia Lewandowska, a 27-year-old resident of Olsztyn, won the title of vice-miss Warmia and Mazury in 2019. Full of life and plans for the future, she was fulfilled professionally and as a mother of a four-year-old son. Her life changed dramatically in February 2025 when she unexpectedly fell ill.

Initial symptoms: mistaken for flu

Initially, Natalia thought she had contracted the common flu. She complained of photophobia and severe back and leg pain. These symptoms lasted for three days. When she decided to go to the doctor, she went out into the street and collapsed.

Diagnosis: Guillain-Barré syndrome

After being taken to hospital, doctors diagnosed Natalia with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks peripheral nerves, leading to inflammation and damage. The disease can lead to serious complications, including paralysis and respiratory problems.

Health deterioration

Natalia’s condition deteriorated rapidly. She stopped walking and had difficulty swallowing and breathing. She was transferred to the Medical Intensive Care Unit, where she is connected to a ventilator. Due to her low haemoglobin, she was transfused with blood. Currently, Natalia is conscious but unable to speak; communication with her is done by reading her mouth movements.

Guillain-Barré syndrome: what is the disease?

GBS is a rare autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerves, leading to inflammation and damage. It is most often preceded by a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms include tingling, muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis and breathing problems. Treatment consists of intravenous immunoglobulin or plasmapheresis and intensive rehabilitation.

Appeal for help: collection for treatment and rehabilitation

Natalia’s family has launched a collection on the pomagam.pl platform to fund her expensive treatment and rehabilitation. Anyone who would like to support Natalia in her fight for recovery can do so by visiting the collection page.
