Roman Polanski and Emmanuelle Seigner – the story of an extraordinary relationship

First meeting and fascination

Roman Polanski and Emmanuelle Seigner met at a time when they were separated not only by a gulf of life experience, but also by 33 years of age difference. In spite of these differences, from the very first moments of their meeting an extraordinary feeling was born, which in time turned into a deep bond. Emmanuelle, a young, vivacious artist, was charmed by Roman’s personality – a man with a huge appetite for life, witty and intelligent, who surprised her at every turn.

Overcoming adversity

Their relationship was controversial from the start. The age difference and the director’s turbulent past were fodder for the media, which did not believe in the permanence of their affection. However, the couple did not let themselves be swayed by public scepticism, proving that their relationship is based on deep understanding, respect and equality. Emmanuelle has also repeatedly refuted accusations that with a relationship with an older man she is trying to solve problems and that Polanski is supposed to `replace her father’. By her own admission, there is total equality in their relationship:

Roman is neither my father nor my teacher. (…) He does not make decisions for me. I am not an idiot,” she admitted.

Equality and partnership

There is no room for domination or role substitution in their relationship. As Emmanuelle herself has emphasised, Roman has never been a father or a teacher to her. Their relationship is based on mutual respect and equality. Decisions are made together and each of them has their own independent space to develop.

Family and private life

Roman and Emmanuelle lived to have two children, who strengthened their relationship and showed that love can develop into a strong, close-knit family. As a mother and wife, Emmanuelle has stood up for her family against accusations and attempts at interference from the media, showing her strength and courage.
