Grzegorz Ciechowski, a legend of Polish music and lead singer of the band Republika, tragically passed away on 22 December 2001, but years after his death there is a dispute over the copyrights he inherited from him and the royalties associated with them. Despite the passage of time, the artist's widow, Anna Skrobiszewska, and his daughter, Weronika Ciechowska, remain in conflict over royalties related to Ciechowski's artistic work.

Following the death of Grzegorz Ciechowski, who went down in the history of Polish music as one of the most important artists of the communist era, the heirs are fighting a battle over the considerable fortune he left behind. Although more than two decades have passed since the tragic event, the case has not found its resolution and the battle for copyrights and royalties continues.

The love life of Grzegorz Ciechowski

Grzegorz Ciechowski had a turbulent love life. In the 1970s he was married to Jolanta Muchlińska, and later had an affair with actress and director Małgorzata Potocka. The musician’s last partner was Anna Wędrowska, whom he married in 1994 and had three children: Helena, Bruno and Jozefina. After the artist’s death, as a result of complications following cardiac surgery, Anna Skrobiszewska, Ciechowski’s widow, took control of royalties and copyrights. The artist’s eldest daughter from his relationship with Małgorzata Potocka, Weronika Ciechowska, received only a retainer and this does not include copyrights inherited from her father. In 2006, as a result of a court settlement, she received a one-off sum of PLN 40,000 from her stepmother. Nevertheless, relations between the women have deteriorated over the years, and financial issues have again become an issue of conflict.

The fight over Ciechowski’s inheritance continues!

Weronika Ciechowska, in one interview, confessed that she does not benefit financially from her father’s work and indicated that she would like to change this. However, complicated family relations and the fight for due rights put her in a difficult situation. Anna Skrobiszewska’s current husband, Wojciech Skrobiszewski, has publicly expressed his surprise and displeasure at how the case is being presented in the media, seeing it as an action aimed at damaging his wife’s reputation. The next hearing in the long-running battle for the rights and property inherited from Grzegorz Ciechowski will take place at the end of November. It is worth pointing out that the artist’s works are still broadcast by various radio and television stations, which translates into significant financial gains associated with his work. The case is therefore taking on a new dimension, being one of the longest and most controversial property disputes in the Polish music world.

It’s a shame that such a talented artist’s legacy is overshadowed by this legal dispute.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for Weronika to see her stepmother in control of everything.
